Marine mammals, including whales, porpoises, and dolphins, depend on their hearing for survival. Sound determines communication, locating food, mates, friends, family, and how to avoid dangerous situations – life’s basics.
And now, in addition to ongoing, relentless noise pollution caused by off-shore oil explorations and engines from boats and ships, the U.S. Navy plans underwater tests with high-powered sonar and explosives for the next five years (between 2014 – 2019) in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
The Navy’s own calculation estimates that tests with sonar and explosives will kill or maim tens of thousands of whales and other marine mammals.
These underwater tests would cause immense pain and suffering to marine mammals when powerful sonar blasts destroy their hearing and cause fatal hemorrhaging of their brains and bubbles in their organs. Naval sonar has already led to mass whale strandings; in 2009, The Scientific American reported that, “Evidence shows that whales will swim hundreds of miles, rapidly change their depth (sometimes leading to bleeding from the eyes and ears), and even beach themselves to get away from the sounds of sonar.”

UPDATE: Thanks to all your emails and calls, the Senate passed the gestation crate ban by a whopping 32-1 margin! That’s even more senators than voted for it last year. This vote shows that both Republican and Democratic lawmakers support commonsense animal protections. Please contact your Assembly members below to keep up the momentum.
As you may recall, last year the New Jersey legislature voted overwhelmingly to ban the pork industry's cruel practice of confining mother pigs to gestation crates, metal cages so small the pigs can't even turn around. Sadly, Gov. Christie callously vetoed the bill, but because of an overwhelming response from New Jersey residents, we came extremely close to passing a historic veto override. That strong effort has set us up in an excellent position to finally ban gestation crates in 2014.

Man who tortured his dog is given maximum sentence – ordered to 15 years in prison

According to Friday’s ABC News 10, a Sacramento, Calif., man has been sentenced to jail time for the abuse and torture of his pit bull.
According to the Sacramento Bee, Sacramento Superior Court Judge Steve White sentenced 49-year-old Robert Lee Brian to the maximum sentence of 15 years and six months in prison for abusing his dog, “Bubba.”
Brian faced felony animal abuse charges after officials seized the abused dog in October 2013; the dog had a fractured skull and snout, in addition to trauma to his face and possible chemical burns. Following Bubba’s removal from Brian’s property, authorities discovered the remains of three other dogs; a necropsy revealed that at least one of those dogs had been abused as well.
Bubba lost vision in one eye, but recovered from the other injuries.

This petition represents an appeal by concerned taxpayers, citizens, tourists and visitors to the United States, to ban the barbaric and sadistic abuse of wildlife for sport and entertainment; that is, the trapping and penning of bears, coyotes, foxes and other wildlife in enclosures, where they cannot escape from hunting dogs that rip them apart, tearing them to pieces, while still alive. The animals most victimized in penning are coyotes and foxes that are trapped and taken to private enclosures or “running pens”. The trapped animals endure high levels of stress while being transported in cages, only to be horrifically killed in penning sessions. Ostensibly, this penning is done to train dogs to hunt, but also for the entertainment of bystanders who take pleasure in watching animals writhe in agony while their bodies are ripped to pieces. This practice is a stain on the reputation of the United States and is banned in most civilized, western countries.
When it comes to bears, the act descends even deeper into human degradation. It is called “bear baiting”, but in fact, is actually “bear tethering/penning” since like the other animals, these bears cannot escape and their end is equally tortured and inhumane. Bears have their teeth and claws removed, and then are tethered to a post to be subjected to repeated assaults by dogs until they die in extreme agony. Without teeth or claws, the bear cannot defend himself and is tortured without mercy, until his last breath. This inhumane practice is called “sport” and is legal only in Pakistan and the United States of America. Learn more. This is not sport. This is horrific and unconscionably cruel and intentional animal abuse.
We ask that you ban these practices completely in all 50 states and mandate prosecution to the fullest extent of the law, with heavy fines and jail sentences imposed upon anyone found guilty of practicing these most repugnant acts.
