Vegetarians and not Vegan
I recently received a comment to a post in my blog. The writter was opposed to the term vegetarians. She wrote to correct me that the word should be Vegan. I usually don't comment on these comments. I am a Vegetarian. I have been so for about 1+1/2 years. My reasons where rooted in the abuse of animals. It took many years to actually make the change. But I am not a vegan. I do believe in vegan philosophy however. I don't wear animals, use animals and my new car does not have leather seats. I know the dairy industry is brutal and abusive. However, I still eat eggs. Once in a while. I drink soy milk and avoid dairy, but sometimes I need the protein when tofu is not available. Sure I have other protein sources. But I have to sometimes resort to eggs. I do not eat meat, pork, poultry, fish or shell fish. My vitamins are vegan. So what is my point. If vegans want everyone to be one, don't bash vegetarians. I don't have a life style that allows me to be a vegan. However, that is my goal. So with that said, bashing vegetarians is a vegan thing imho. My meat eating friends to do not attack me. If anything when we are out they refrain from eating meat in my presence. So my point, am I no different then a meat eater because I am not a vegan? I think I am mostly vegan. I have guilt for eating dairy. However, I will stop at some point.
Finally, if us non meat eaters want to recruit more people to a lifestyle of not eating animals. Then think first that some people may have problems taking that jump. I have never been criticized by anyone but vegans. I post regularly about animal abuse and am 150% pro animal. But everyone has to start somewhere. My nephew is a vegan. However he consumes candy (gelatin) and cane sugar. He also, tells me I am no different then a meat eater. When I explained gelatin, cane sugar and rennet. He was shocked. So a vegetarian taught a vegan something new. We are all on the same side. Vegetarianism is not a dirty word. It is a state of being and eating. It too can be a life style. So to my vegan friends, it's not one or the other. Let people move into veganism without attacking those that are trying. So I say, if you love animals, don't eat them, use them or exploit them. There are other ways to live without consuming animals. If you start as a Vegetarian, that's a good start. If you start as a Vegan thats even better. Either way, you are not supporting a cruel industry.
